Siljanovska in Brussels: We Do Not Accept Negotiations on Identity and Language

The President of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, during her meeting with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, emphasized that the country should not become collateral damage due to vetoes and bilateralism in the European integration process, reports Flaka.

According to a statement from her Cabinet, Siljanovska-Davkova stressed that North Macedonia remains committed to the reform agenda to meet European standards, highlighting that the Copenhagen criteria must remain the sole conditions for accession to the European Union.

“Only with good will, mutual understanding, and respect can misunderstandings and disputes between North Macedonia and Bulgaria be resolved,” the president said.

She added that negotiations about history, culture, and language are not in line with international law and EU principles, describing them as a denial of the national and cultural identity as well as the dignity of the citizens.

The president reiterated that progress in European integration should be measured by the fulfillment of reforms, not by conditions that undermine the right to self-identification.
