Snopçe: Appointment of Trajko Slaveski as Central Bank Governor Is Politically Dangerous

During the parliamentary session on the election of the Governor of the National Bank, MP Halil Snopçe from the Alliance for Albanians strongly opposed the nomination of Trajko Slaveski, calling it both inappropriate and dangerous.

“This is a purely political proposal,” Snopçe emphasized, “Slaveski’s name is closely associated with the darkest period of VMRO-DPMNE’s rule under Nikola Gruevski.”

As former Minister of Finance during that era, Slaveski was part of a government that systematically abused institutions for party and personal gain. Snopçe argued that Slaveski has never demonstrated independent thinking, but rather political loyalty to the party and its leadership.

“The appointment of someone like Slaveski—who openly aligns himself with political structures—means the final establishment of partisan control over the country’s monetary and economic policy,” Snopçe stated.

He also recalled Slaveski’s role as a councilor in the City of Skopje, where he acted more as a political blocker than a constructive collaborator. “He never spoke out about the accusations made by the mayor regarding the urban mafia and took an opportunistic stance.”

The Alliance for Albanians is categorically against placing political control over the most critical institution responsible for monetary policy in the country.
